Applying on concrete surface Applying on wood surface

Preparing the surface:

The surface must be cleaned before applying Texnov. Check to make sure the surface to be treated is not covered with something (sealant, paint, epoxy, etc.) that will negatively impact adherence.

To clean a concrete surface, we recommend using the following method:

  1. Clean surface with a rotary jet 3500 lbs pressure washer.
  2. With a handle brush, scrub surface with a mix of hydrochloric acid and water (1 part acid/3 parts water). Apply only in a well-ventilated area wearing appropriate protective equipment.
  3. Rinse with running water.

To clean a wood, masonite or other surface, we recommend using the following method:

  1. Clean surface with a rotary jet pressure washer.
  2. With a handle brush, scrub surface with a mix of TSP and water. If grease, oil, etc. is or has ever been present on the surface to be treated, use a degreaser.
  3. Rinse with running water.

Note:

  • If necessary, use a degreaser to eliminate any grease or oil.
  • If you suspect a sealant or other product likely to negatively impact Texnov adherence to the surface was applied, the surface might have to be sanded prior to cleaning.
  • Before applying Texnov compound, we recommend the following test: Applying strong hand pressure, stick 60cm pieces of masking tape to different areas of the surface to be treated. If the tape peels off by itself, it is very likely that the compound will also peel off. If you peel off the tape and It is full of dirt, the surface is either inappropriate for Texnov application or has not been cleaned adequately.

Repairing a concrete surface:

If the concrete surface has a small crack, you can widen it slightly with a grinder, clean it and fill it with a polyurethane sealant.

If the concrete surface is slightly damaged by wear, calcium or inclement weather, we recommend troweling a coat of TexNov - Multi-use Polymer on entire surface. If surface requires major repairs, we recommend installing a reinforcing fibreglass mesh.

Repairing a wood or other material surface:

Plywood:
If the plywood surface has been in place for several years, is painted or needs a lot of preparation, but is still good, we suggest screwing on staggered good-quality plywood panels. That way, you increase the deck’s structural resistance while decreasing the risk of cracks appearing in the joints. During panel installation, leave a 1/8 in to ¼ in gap between panels to allow polyurethane sealant application.

Boards:
If the deck or surface is made up of boards, replace damaged sections or boards.

Precautions before application

The following precautions should be taken prior to Texnov compound application:

  • The surface must be clean and dry.
  • Outside temperature must be above 15oC during 24 hours after application.
  • Ground and ambient air humidity level must not be too high (to allow drying).
  • Do not apply when temperature is above 30oC or when surface is in the sun all day, as this would cause product to dry too quickly and prevent penetration.
  • Do not apply to a surface that was in the sun all day and has just been shaded, since it would be too hot. Apply early in the morning.
  • Beware of dew in spring and fall.
  • Ideally, the surface must not be rained on for 6 to 8 hours after application.

Applying Texnov compound:

Texnov Compound can be applied with a paintbrush, roller or gravity-fed gun. The longer the roller nap, the rougher the texture.

We recommend applying two coats of Texnov compound perpendicularly to one another. For the first one, empty a third of the product necessary to cover surface into another container. Add a maximum of 1% to 2% of water (volume) and mix well. This will allow the compound to dry more slowly and so to better penetrate the surface. Always save most practical application direction for the second coat.

The second coat of compound should always be applied undiluted. For a uniform texture, it should be applied perpendicularly to the bottom coat.

Note:

  • Prior to applying Texnov with a roller, we recommend protecting surfaces that do not need to be coated with masking tape and protective material.
  • Cutting in the edges with a paintbrush will facilitate the application of the rolled coat.
  • If you wish to conceal slight imperfections, apply a coat of compound to them before applying the first coat.
  • If you want a more textured effect, use a roll with a longer nap. Once product has dried slightly, go over the treated surface once more with the roller to lift the grain slightly.
